The Eleven Year Itch

This summer marks the 11th anniversary of Samantha Gore Interiors + Design. And, at risk of getting a little spiritual on you, looking back at these gratifying years in the art and interior design business, I find my greatest inspiration comes when I’m designing spaces meant to be enjoyed for a life lived well.

On the occasion of my 11th anniversary (and inspired by my brainwave) I’ve been taking a trip back into my archives, revisiting some of my favorite spaces from those early days. What resonates with me is how much these spaces still so alive, always there to welcome you, a comfort and a refuge.

Love where you live.

Beginning here with my very first space on Chambers Street in TriBeCa (excuse the fuzzy photo, this was 2007 after all). We custom designed and built a temperature and humidity controlled rosewood guitar cabinet for my client’s ever-growing collection and use. I still flip over the rug based on a traditional Tibetan pangden or apron motif with an updated and personalized color palette. The grasscloth wallpaper I would use again today. The textures and and the palette of the rug laid the key for the rest of the space (not pictured) with a cadet blue study, rich red foyer and meditative grey bedroom.

Floorplan. Shout out to my my first client, Jason. Always a champion and ever my dear friend.

I have since forgotten this cat’s name, but we specifically chose the fabric on the sofa to be to his specifications. He still loved the rug the most anyway. This natural secondary color scheme is still a classic. With period accents the owner was able to live with design elements that he relates to.

We often integrate our client’s well-loved pieces, but in this case the client needed a fresh start from the furniture haphazardly collected during graduate school. With the exception of the coffee table (who’s legs were cut down to size), we designed and selected everything in this room and they loved it (see the before here!). Those custom bookcases were just what she had in mind. I love how it feels like she just stepped out to walk their dog Parker and will be back soon to check in at her desk.

This is the A-team! I’ve known these two (designer and photographer) since I was 18. They keep me laughing and loved and come with me on all of my big projects. They make the dream work.

I love working with tile and I’m captivated with this custom master bath glass mosaic from Sicis. We placed it across from the vanity to bring this enchanted garden into everyday life.

These next clients on Columbus Circle  love color and bold statements. I was over the moon when they decided to go with these exquisite Tom Dixon fixtures, seen here on momentous install day (when I made the electrician turn them on before he was finished installing them just so we could them glow). See the whole incredible color story of that apartment here.

This airy and lovely bedroom was shared by a dynamic sister-brother duo. While she dances and reads he invents and draws and they both share their mother’s passion for acting and drama. Its a perk to know these kids, too. The room was cleverly divided into his and her areas. A literal drawing of a line for them to have some space of their own. What is not pictured is the mess under the lofted bed on the right where Liam had his workbench with an explosion of science projects and art supplies.

It’s been an incredible 11 years, NYC! Wondering now what we have in store for each other in the next 11? Thank you for being on this journey with me.
